Just watched this movie Freedom Writers (Based on a true story), with its setting in Long Beach California. I can't help but associate with the setting. But with the people, not much I would say. The class that the main character Erin Gruwell (played by Hilary Swank) taught came from several ethnic backgrounds and didn't mix much even though most came from gangs, went to juvenile court and knew at least one friend who was shot dead by gangs. This was really quite an eye-opener. I didn't know that 'race' was such a big issue in California in the past (or perhaps even in the present) till I watched this. Excellent moving movie for anyone with a bit of spare time.
