I opened the mail box this evening delighted to find a letter which wished me a happy 21st birthday in real advance. Of course, when you receive printed letters like these, sending you wishes 2 months before your actual birthday, you start to worry a little. And I was not entirely wrong about that. My delight level diminished after I saw where the letter came from - National Organ Transplant Unit. They were actually educating me on the automatic pledge of my organs under the HOTA scheme (Human Organ Transplant Act).
After the age of 21, all Singaporeans are immediately placed under that scheme but we have a right to opt out for whatever reason. This got me thinking. Why ever the option to opt out since all our bodies return to dust anyway? This 'birthday wish' thus came as a solemn reminder that us as human beings do not live forever. We return to dust when we die. The HOTA booklet carried on explaining the difference between cardiac death and brain death, how my corpse would remain in pristine condition after the operation to harvest my organs... my soul is saved by God and that is enough. What happens to my body, i leave it in the hands of the surgeon.

When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
Refrain:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
What a timeless truth in this time where I need it most

This advertisement is quite a dark one and brings across its message pretty well. Looking deeper, this picture reminds me of our character - our human nature. On the outside, one may seem good-looking, clever, sociable, morally-upright...
But as God says in the Bible, man is downright sinful and has no innate ability to obey God. We are like that hand, shaped like a normal-looking hand, but consisting of filthy, ugly, deep and dark secrets, waiting like ticking time bombs to be exposed some day.

Who Am I
I'm Lois, a human being saved and currently alive by God's grace.
[I am crucified with Christ: neverthless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me.
Galations 2:20]
