I boarded a public bus today heading for home. Whilst standing amidst others in a relatively crowded bus, a group of youths, perhaps 16-18 yrs or age were making quite a ruckus. They were spilt into two groups and were shouting and laughing to each other across the first half of the bendy bus. Of course, with some shrieks of laughter here and there, combined with some crude words and random unnecessary talk over people's heads, the public surrounding them seemed pretty irritated and annoyed. I was not that affected and continued in do-re-mi land with my ipod.
Immediately after they left - silence. Though the bus engine continued to roar and my ipod was drowning all outside sound, the bus was so silent. Not only that. Their seats were instantly taken up by a group of mute girls. Their hands moved quietly and confidently in the air, writing a language most of us do not know - sign language. This immediately struck me as a stark contrast to the loudness created by the youths previously. I could not help but smile at them as I thought of a lesson I drew from this observation:
Speech - such a beautiful thing to be able to speak. Yet, we abuse this gift many times, choosing to let our tongue be the steer while we happily ride on in the back seat. This results in us speaking without thinking, without a care for others around. James warns us against this in the bible . Let us appreciate the times when we ought to be silent.
[ 1 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. 2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. 4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things.
See how great a forest a little fire kindles! James 3:1-5]
